Building a Strong Website by Linking

Your Website is really only as strong as your "weakest link." Don't let this confuse you, as it's a simple but true fact that the more links you have into your site from the outside world, the better your Google ranking will be.

Variable Width Versus Fixed Width Layouts

One of the challenges that I've faced in web design and in designing my own site particulary, was to create a "flexible" layout that expands with the browser window or to make it fixed width.

There are advantages with both layouts. Variable width layouts of course have the ability to be more flexible and can change with the size of the monitor that a person is using. This is very nice when a lot of information must fit into a small space and you know your audience will probably be using very large screens. An example of a site that does this very effectlively is SitePoint.com. Amazon also does a very good job at utilizing this type of site design.

However, flexible layout isn't perfect either, especially with sites that tend to have more fixed content and a lot of graphics. The variable layouts can put pictures and text in odd places depending on the computer and settings of the individual user. Since my site will tend to have more graphics and the layout is important to me, I've decided to stay with a fixed-width layout, at least for now. Maybe one of these days the flexible layout will be more consistent from system to system and I will give it serious consideration for a future revision of Eagle's Eye Design.
